ABOUT NORTHAMPTON FRIENDS MEETING

Who we are:

We are a Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. We are a member of New England Yearly Meeting which is our highest denominational body.

We are a theologically diverse spiritual community, and we welcome you whatever your religious (or not) background. While we recognize that we often fall short, we are deeply committed to individuals and families, to same sex marriage, to trans and non-binary rights, to accessibility (hearing, mobility, scent, chemical, and food sensitivities) and to being an anti-racist community.

Our history:

Northampton Friends Meeting was founded in 1994 by Friends who budded off from Mount Toby Friends Meeting in Leverett, MA to serve Friends on the west side of the Connecticut river.

The Religious Society of Friends, also known as Quakers, originated in England in the 17th century as a Christian movement founded by George Fox. We emphasize a direct personal experience of God rather than ritual and ceremony, and advocate for simplicity, peace, integrity, community, and equality. Quakers have been influential in social reform movements throughout history, such as the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, and pacifism, particularly in the United States and Britain.
